The ability to look at your market and make judgements has never been easier to do. Here is one example from WNYC.org designed to give New Yorkers a good look at its median-income.
The median is the middle number. With 1,000 households in a census tract and a median income was $50,000 it would mean that 500 households are over that number and 500 under or $50,000 is the “median”. Have a look around the MXB census tracts using the “see whole city” map below

The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey is an sample survey estimate., the ACS measures a broad range of socioeconomic statistics, including income, commuting times and educational attainment. WNYC.org offers many articles of interest.
